Many of you might have heard of Lake Titicaca when you were younger. If you have yet to hear about it, here are a couple of fascinating facts about this place. Lake Titicaca is the largest freshwater lake in South America and the world's highest lake. This lake is more than 120 miles long and 50 miles wide; it was the center of the Incan civilization and today lies between the borders of Bolivia and Peru.
This fantastic ocean-blue lake has a beautiful panoramic view of the snowy Andean mountains. And if that were not enough, Titicaca contains many islands, aka "floating islands," in the middle of the lake. These floating islands are magical places with so much history and culture. If you plan to go to Bolivia, Lake Titicaca is a must.
These are my top 5 recommendations before adventuring to this wonderful place:
1. Get a local travel agency
You will most likely be in La Paz before adventuring in Lake Titicaca. I always recommend people to book a local agency in La Paz so they can drive and guide them throughout the trip. Having a travel agency that knows the area and the people is extremely helpful, especially if you encounter an unexpected event, such as a local strike (which is not uncommon). Local agencies are experts and will know what to do and how to overcome unexpected situations. Also, these agencies are normally very flexible and adaptable. Let them know what your limitations are (budget, time, etc.), and they will likely give you a great and suitable option.

2. Bring warm clothes
If you go in the summertime, temperatures are warmer than average. However, the wind can be cold. Therefore, I always recommend bringing a warm jacket even if the day says the opposite. Now in the wintertime, this place is freezing. Be prepared because boat time is at least one hour, and the wind while sitting in a boat can make you feel very cold very quickly. Most boats have an open section at the top and a closed one beneath (as seen in the image below). You (like most tourists) might choose to be on top of the boat because you don't want to miss the fantastic panoramic view of the lake and the Andes so do not forget to be warm.
3. Be prepared for the altitude
Always bring snacks, water, and sorojchipill (a pill to alleviate altitude sickness). You can get this pill anywhere. If you forget to buy this pill in La Paz, tell your tourist guide to take you to the closest local pharmacy.
Remember, the lake is approximately 12,000 ft above sea level, so you might want to take a pill before jumping into the boat or starting a hike to avoid feeling sick. Also, try to avoid fast movements, running, or high-intensity exercise. Altitude sickness is not a joke so try to plan ahead and make your visit as enjoyable as possible.
4. Eat fresh trout from Lake Titicaca
One of the best local meals in Lake Titicaca is the famous trout. These brown trouts were introduced to the lake in the 1940s to increase commercial fishing in the area. Nowadays the trouts are one of the most popular meals in the area. All local restaurants have this delicious fish ready for you to try it. The popular dish is very simple; it contains fried trout, some veggies, and white rice or fried potatoes. As simple as it sounds, this meal is the perfect combination of a light and delicious lunch, especially if you are experiencing tummy troubles due to the altitude.
5. Visit La isla del Sol
La Isla del Sol (the sun island) is located in the southern part of Titicaca Lake, one hour and a half from Copacabana (the dock where all the boats are). This fantastic island has so many activities you can choose from. You can choose different trails and see incredible panoramic views from different viewpoints. There are no paved roads on the island, so you will have to walk if you want to move around. I highly recommend going to the top because the views of the snowing Andes mountains are fantastic. Also, you can visit different archeological places, such as Las Ruinas de Challa or El Templo Pilkokaina. There you will be able to meet locals and buy some cool souvenirs.
