As more and more tourists from around the world visit the magnificent salt flat, the hospitality industry in the area has also expanded in the last decade, allowing tourists to choose different experiences. Whether you are a backpacker exploring Bolivia on a budget or traveling around Bolivia in a more comfortable, relaxing, and/or luxurious type of travel, the Uyuni salt flat has many hotels and hostels that will meet your desired interests and budget. Finding the ideal hotel is crucial if you plan to go with family, friends, and/or your partner. The salt flat can be a bit extreme for some travelers (like me) that are not very acclimated to the altitude; therefore, choosing where you stay will impact your overall experience in the salt flat.
I will share with you my favorite hotel in the area. I have stayed in this beautiful hotel four times already. Here are why I recommend this hotel so much.
Luna Salada is a 4-star, beautiful, luxurious hotel with excellent food and hospitality service. It is beautifully decorated with traditional textiles, arts, and colors representing Bolivia and its culture. The walls, chairs, tables, and floor are made of salt. Exploring this hotel is a truly unique experience; with a rustic and colorful touch, its decor portrays a beautiful contrast that makes each room feel cozy and inviting. This place is perfect for a honeymoon trip and/or an adventure but relaxing experience with friends or family. Staying in a place like Luna Salada will enhance your overall stay in the salt flat by giving you an immersive and unique experience to share and relax with your loved ones.
Unique hotel entirely made out of salt
Most activities in the salt flat and its surroundings occur during the day. You will most likely start your day at 11-12 PM and return to your hotel at 6-7 PM after sunset (or before). I recommend people to stay in the salt flat to see the incredible sunsets if possible. Once you are back from the salt flat, this hotel has the perfect services for you to relax. The SPA has complimentary access to the hot tub and steam room. Make sure to reserve your spot when you check-in in because it has limited daily spots. The SPA also offers various massage services (these are not included) that you can choose from.
When it comes to food, Luna Salada has such an incredible gastronomy. The breakfast buffet is included, delicious, and with a large variety of food. I love this breakfast because it has several fresh fruit options, which is difficult to find in another hotel since Uyuni is a rural destination. Also, my favorite part of the breakfast is the fantastic panoramic view of the salt flat that you can enjoy while eating a good breakfast meal. For dining options, the hotel has the Tupana Restaurant. This a remarkable gastronomic experience with excellent Bolivian cuisine and a wide selection of the best national wines. Also, if you want to have some drinks before or after dinner, there is a cozy bar on the other side of the hotel where you can have a nice cocktail or a bottle of wine before bedtime.
The cost of the hotel varies approximately from $100-$300+. I have booked this hotel for $110 per night and $205 because of season variations and room selections. Luna Salada has one of the best possible locations, built at the edge of the Uyuni salt flat with a beautiful panoramic view of the salt flat, mountains, and colorful sunsets. It is located just 30 min from the airport and 10 minutes from Colchani, a small town, where you can buy some of the most authentic, handmade local souvenirs.
Also, y if you are lucky when having breakfast, you might be able to see some animals walking around, such as the vicuña (a South American camelid). It is truly a fantastic place where you will experience the local ecosystem and habitat in a comfortable and relaxing way.
I believe this hotel is one of the best in the salt flat. Not only because of the beautiful amenities and spaces but also the services. The food is wonderful, and the people that work there are just excellent. Luna Salada is a unique, comfortable, and perfect hotel for a one-of-a-kind experience in the sat flat.
